Dik Nicolai (NL -1975) is an independent Dutch photographer who creates his images in his studio in the countryside of Amsterdam. Nicolai signs his works with Nicolaii, a double i. Nicolai's his work consists of editorial images for fashion campaigns as well as portraits.
His photos are widely appreciated and have been published in a large number of magazines.
Nicolai is fascinated by the deeper personality of the model and he is keen to capture the essence of their character. This signature results in his work frequently being commissioned by an important circle of collectors.
Over the years, Nicolai felt the desire to create a free, artistic oeuvre next to his commercial work. Fascinated by the bright Dutch light, he creates exquisite still lifes, inspired by the Dutch Old Masters combined with his own characteristic signature. Nicolai often calls his still lifes ‘moments’.
In traditional compositions he hides symbolic elements and subtle references the viewer may not notice instantly. The scenery he builds in front of his camera, often bathing in daylight, expresses moments of stillness, serenity and simple beauty. Nicolaii’s still lifes are included in many Dutch and international collections.
Nicolai also creates customized family portraits since 2012: still lifes consisting of objects related to one or more members of a family or (family) business. Taken together, these symbolic elements become a unique portrait. Special commissions are welcomed. Prints are made in small editions, with a certificate of authenticity.
’I am a Momentographer while creating my still live images and a Contactographer while producing my commercial works.’
